Aftermath

The standards of the evening

now tell their tales of carnage.

Siren choirs sing their songs

up and down these soggy streets.

Men bow low their heavy heads

and start off for home.

It has struck the hour of aftermath,

the silent hour, the quiet time,

dusk ushers forth the steady marches

and cathedral bells

chime.
